Time Life: Growth

This is a redesign of one of the volumes from the popular TimeLife series of educational books from the 1960's. Of the 26 volumes in the Life Science Library, I chose to redesign Growth. The redesign consists of two full chapters; each comprised of text followed by a photo essay. The book's original text is used; paired with photographs–both old and new, collaged together with bold, unifying pops of orange.

My goal in utilizing the medium of collage is to create visually interesting focal points throughout the chapters to aid the reader through the scientific text without a loss of interest. In a sense, I want the book's ideas to read without having to be read.

I was intrigued by the raw and organic beauty of the developing life that took place in the Next Seven Months and chose to contrast it with the second chapter–Flaws in Development. I find the crippled, imperfect life to possess a peculiar type of unconventional beauty.
